Disaster Rebuild is ongoing in our neighboring counties, and Hudson First is helping to make a difference. Our “next steps” efforts are in two areas: Rebuild Pineola Baptist Church in Pineola, NC.
This over 100 year-old, picturesque church in Avery County was inundated with 5 feet of water in its sanctuary and fellowship hall when the South Toe River overflowed its banks, becoming a 500 feet wide torrent. Through funds from our State Convention and monies the church had available, they can restore their fellowship hall. Our HF Missions Committee has agreed to direct $29,000 from existing funds designated for Helene Relief to restore their sanctuary. Our church member, David Seagle, is working directly with the Pineola Church, and he has secured numerous donations and discounted materials and is arranging the work crews. David’s efforts and the generosity of vendors has cut the cost of the total project in half. The renovation will include insulation, drywall, flooring, and a new HVAC system. Our goal is to complete the work before Christmas, enabling the church to hold their Christmas Eve service in the sanctuary.
Baptists on Mission, the disaster relief arm of the NC State Baptist Convention, has begun an initiative called Essential Rapid Repairs (ERR) with the goal of re-housing 1,000 displaced people/families as soon as possible. These families’ homes were rendered unlivable by the storm, and they are currently living in other towns, with relatives, or as you’ve seen, in vehicles or
tents. Most of the homes average 1,000-1,200 square feet. For an average of $15,000 per home, renovations would include insulation, drywall, subflooring, electricity, plumbing, and heat. These repairs would allow families to move back into their homes and be warm and safe. Our Missions Committee has approved $30,000 from our Caring, Sharing, Loving
missions fund to be used to re-house two families. Would you like to give and help re-house additional families?
Together, let’s give to help another family or two get back into their homes. Also, you can volunteer to serve and help with the rebuilds. This would be a great opportunity for your Life Groups to serve together and make a difference. Use the links below to help these displaced families. You can also give from our website, the church app, or by check (Include “ERR” or “Helene” in the memo line).
